Is it normal?Bringing home a teeny tiny puppy can be scary and even raising a yorkie can sometimes be a daunting task. So here are a few questions and answers on what to expect with your dog. Q: Is it normal when a yorkie's ears don't stand up? A: A yorkie's ears don't fully stand up until they are about 3-6 months old. If your puppy is a late bloomer, don't panic, but there are web sites and books out there that suggest ways (such as taping) and helping the process along. Q: Is it normal that my yorkie coughs? A: It depends on the cough. All dogs cough at some point in their lives and most of the noises they make are perfectly normal. Prolonged coughs or coughs with discharge from the mouth or nose might though just warrent a visit to the vet. Sometimes I've had a yorkie that has a little coughing jag, and my uncle (who was a pet store owner and professional groomer) taught us to rub gently under the neck area until the coughing susides. Q: Is it normal that my yorkie rubs her bottom on the floor? A: Yes, this is normal. And while they shouldn't do it all the time, on occasion you will see it happen and it is a sign that you need to check your pooch for 'cling ons'. Most yorkies can't stand the feel of something sticking to them or in their hair and want it removed ASAP! On the other hand, if it continues over time, this could be a sign of worms. Ew, I know, but you should know it could be the case if the yorkie doesn't appear to have anything "back there", but continues over time to rub across the floor. Q: Is it normal for my yorkie to eat grass? A: I don't know if it's "normal" but I do know that my yorkie, Isabel, loves the outdoors and she does occasionally chew on a blade of grass. But now that we're on the subject, you want to be veeery careful with pesticide treated grass or even a neighbors yard that has been treated for even walking in it for a yorkie who is so low to the ground can be dangerous! (I highly recommend keeping any animal away from chemically treated lawns). Q: Is it normal for my yorkie to get a flea dip? A: I personally say no. Only because my family once rescued a yorkie that had been badly burned because of an over strength flea dip and it was so sad to see that her hair had all fallen out. Eventually, with much care and skin treatments, her hair did re-grow, but not to the beauty that it once was. Q: Is it normal for my yorkie to look like she is crying? A: Yes, it is normal for yorkies to have tearing, but it does not mean they are sad. Many yorkies secrete a tear like liquid and this is perfectly fine. You must be really particular (and careful) though about cleaning the eye area at bath time because this will eventually form a hard crust below the eye. If your yorkie has a longer coat, be sure to keep the hair up in a top knot or out of the eyes (I mean really, who likes hair in their eyes?) as this hair can cause further irritation. When Isabel goes to the groomer, they clip the hair in the eye area short, so as to help with matting.
