Yorkies are very alert dogs, making them an excellent watch dog breed.

While true that yorkies are easily exciteable and do instinctively bark at most anything, a well trained yorkie will refrain when directed by its' owner.

Remember that yorkie personality is one part genetics and one part training. Begin early to train your yorkie to fit in with your lifestyle.

Personality

I don't know about you, but I love to watch the dog shows on Animal Planet! At one show, as the Yorkshire Terrier was presented, the announcer commented on how "the little guy could stand in a ring with even the largest of dogs and still think he could take him". That's the tenacity of the terrier! Thinking they are all that and a bag of chips.

Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred for ratting. Not such a luxurious job, but their small body was perfect for getting into small holes or anywhere else those pesty little rodents buried themselves. Don't assume that "we've come a long way baby" and that this charming lovable lapdog has evolved to having no interest whatsoever in the sport of their ancestors. In fact, if you ever watch the Earthdog Trials on TV (the underground relays where dogs are challenged to instintively find an animal or object), you might just be surprised to see terriers among the list of competetors.

So next time your yorkie takes off chasing a rabbit in the yard, or sniffs the the heck out of the cushions on your sofa or every possible perimeter during play day at the park, you'll be more inclined now to know why!

A Small Question...

If you can start the day without caffeine; if you can get going without pep pills; if you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains; if you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles; if you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it; if you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time; if you can forgive a friend's lack of consideration; if you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of your own, something goes wrong; if you can take criticism and blame without resentment; if you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him; if you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend; if you can face the world without lies and deceit; if you can conquer tension without medical help; if you can relax without liquor; if you can sleep that deep without the aid of drugs; if you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed or color, religion or politics; then, my friend, you're almost as good as your dog. Almost, but not quite.
